We focus on laying the foundation for some of the most important skills needed for long-term academic and professional success: the INTERPRETATION of text, the APPLICATION of high-level analysis through multiple lenses, and the CONSTRUCTION of superb written work. We educate high school students to the highest international English standards, so they can thrive at top universities in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. BOOK A CALL TO LEARN MORE

OUR APPROACH

How are we different from tutors, writing centers and online writing services? We believe that great thinkers and writers are made by MIRRORING the analysis and writing processes. First, students are taught how to critically analyze fiction and non-fiction through the Integrated Analysis Method. Second, teachers WRITE WITH THE STUDENTS, and SHOW them how to write perfectly structured essays that incorporate the high-level insights they learn. Last, students APPLY the analysis and writing skills to their work EVERY class, and they get CONTINUOUS FEEDBACK that helps them gain mastery over their writing. The classes are university-style lectures combined with REAL-TIME PRACTISE that allow students to hone their writing skills. BOOK A CALL TO LEARN MORE

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Susan Avar is an accomplished educator who has been teaching writing for over twenty years to students in Canada, the US, and internationally. She specifically focuses on helping high school students MASTER ACADEMIC ESSAY WRITING and ANALYSIS through the Integrated Analysis Method (I.A.M). This writing method helps students in Regular, Honours, AP & IB (SL & HL) English classes overcome the frustrations of subjective English marking by equipping them with university-level writing skills that focus on analysis-based writing. Students leave repetitive and summary-style writing behind. Her MISSION is to help adolescents become articulate and confident writers who thrive in their high school and university classes. Testimonials

I’ve learned so many useful ideas that have helped me become a strong writer and have made me a successful student. Specifically, Susan explains the literature theories clearly and thoroughly, and the concepts have helped me explore all stories in depth. My writing skills have improved ten-fold. My final mark this year is a 93%, up from 76% last year. Thank you!

There is so much I like about Susan’s teaching. First, I like how she writes example paragraphs and essays with us, so we get a feel for how to use the skills she teaches and then apply them to our writing. Second, I like how there is writing every class and she looks at our work and gives us individual feedback because we don’t leave class feeling unsure about our development. Third, the techniques she teaches us in class have allowed me to write an essay in a shorter period-of-time, which was one my weaknesses before. Finally, she explains everything very clearly, and even when I don’t understand a concept initially, she provides great examples to help me comprehended it in the end. I’ve been recommending her classes because they are applicable to my English class at school and have improved my grades. I finished English with 92%.

I think one of Susan’s best qualities is that she dedicates a lot of time to each and every student! She’s extremely organized and the classes are a lot of work, but the focus on high-end analysis has really helped me in school. I feel that my  critical analysis skills have improved a lot, and my narrative writing has improved, as well. Overall, taking the classes with you has made me more confident in my own writing skills, and has helped me improve the skills that I need to work on. I’m excited to be back in September!

Susan, I loved everything about your class and I’ve been recommending you to my friends. I wish you a great school year and thank you for your help.

Susan thank you so much for teaching me! I’ve learned so much under your guidance and I definitely feel like I have a better grasp of literature than I did at the beginning of the year. I feel like I appreciate literature much more than I did last year: to be honest, last year English was one of my least favourite classes, but now I would say it’s one of my favourites. My final grade 10 English mark was 74%, and my final mark in IB English 11 was 96%. I attribute most of my improvement to your class. Thanks so much again for everything!!

Susan, I’ve learned so much from you! I use the critical reading and analysis skills I learned from you every time I do an academic reading. I can also see how much my writing has improved under time-pressure as a result of all the practise we had with you in class. Thank you for everything!

My essay writing skills have improved so much, and the classes are so useful for my school work. I really like the way the classes are structured and the way the writing, analysis and theories are taught. The course load is just right and I have learned more in a few months here than over the last few years at school. I highly recommend these writing classes!

Susan is such a patient, helpful and enthusiastic teacher. I really like how she teaches essay writing in a very concise and methodological way. It’s easy to follow her examples to create a clear and organized essay. Her classes helped me prepare for the ACT, and anyone who’s aiming for a better English mark and to develop great writing skills, will find her lessons very useful.

I recently finished grade 12 and I’m happy to say that I received 98%. I believe that my success was mostly due to the lessons that I took from you [Susan] during the last school year. I think the projection of your voice is one of your strengths; it has a very rich tone which keeps me engaged during class. I enjoyed your straightforward methods when analyzing poems and stories. Some teachers go around in circles and never give a clear explanation of either the poem or short story being studied. You offer a precise analysis which has helped me improve my interpretation and understanding of poetry and stories. The literature pieces that we read were very enjoyable too. Overall, I feel that after taking your classes, I have greatly improved my critical analysis skills. I find that my writing contains less summary and a lot more insightful analysis. I would recommend your classes to my friends since they are a lot more productive and enlightening than regular school English classes. I’m ready to tackle any future university course. Thank you for everything!

I absolutely love your teaching; I liked learning about essay structure and critical analysis. I improved my essay writing skills so much from seeing you write essays, and I completely understand how to write essays now. My past tutors never taught me writing skills. I’m so glad I studied with you these past years, and I’ll always remember that the first year I took your class, my mark increased by 20%. I absolutely love your teaching, and I’m going to miss your classes :))))
